This piece was a difficult one for me to create.
Before it became something widely talked about, I witnessed a group of young men and women being taken by ICE. At the time, I didn’t understand what was happening—I just remember the panic. A coworker pulled me away and pushed me outside, telling me not to go back in. Later, she explained everything to me, but that moment stayed with me. It lingered.
This work became a way to process that feeling.
It didn’t begin as what you see now. At first, it was just her. Then came the crown. Then the bat. The box beneath her shifted into ice. Her pose changed. I added the hat, the details, and the inverted flag. Each decision came gradually, as the piece evolved alongside my understanding of what I was trying to express.
She now sits on a cracking block of ice—something that appears solid, but is already giving way. The bat rests in her grasp not as an act of violence, but as a symbol of readiness. The inverted flag hangs behind her as a quiet signal—reflecting tension, contradiction, and a sense of distress that lives in the background of everyday life.
For me, this piece holds that overwhelming realization—the tension between wanting to stand up and needing to step back. The weight of constant information, the anger, the exhaustion, and the effort to prepare for what comes next.
She does not move. She does not panic.
She holds her ground. This work is part of an ongoing narrative, with a sister piece already in progress—continuing to explore these emotions, questions, and the search for clarity in an uncertain moment.
